We get it. After your workout you may want to focus on other things like showering, eating, drinking, and sleeping. But this is one the of the simplest mistakes. Get your gi out of the workout bag and into the wash. If you keep the workout bag in the back of your vehicle the smell will permeate through the bag and infect your car. It’s best to get that gi out of the car, out of the bag and into the wash. Letting the gi sit in the bag is a sure-fire way to get that funky smell to really stick the gi. If you cannot get the gi into the wash then air dry over some lawn furniture.

I love fixes that don’t require having to purchase some specialized expensive products. All that is needed is common white distilled vinegar and baking soda. First, put your gi in the wash alone. Gi top, pants, belt, rash guards, etc. Throw in a cup of vinegar and another cup of baking soda. Wash in warm water for a standard period of time.

How to clean your jiu jitsu gi by air drying in the sun

Sunlight has an effective way of killing off bacteria. I see this with teammates that live in apartments. Though this is not a substitute for washing your gi. You have to wash your gi after every BJJ class. Anything less is just not sanitary. This can be a great method if you live in one the hotter/drier regions. If setting your gi up outside is not an option then putting your gi dryer will work just not quite as well.

Disinfect your Jiu Jitsu bag with Lysol. But throw it in the wash once a month.

Your workout bag can be part of the problem. I make a point to throw them back in the wash once a month as well. If you can’t get the bag into the wash, a disinfectant spray will be helpful.
